Te Auaha Announces the Newest Production by Stage and Screen Arts & Circus Students
Mary Zimmerman’s The Arabian Nights from 19 to 23 June.
– “in our heads we contain all the energies of the universe"
Directed by Annie Ruth. Original Music composed by Clinton Zerf.
ARABIAN NIGHTS will enchant you with Mary Zimmerman’s take on these wonderful fables from the Islamic Golden Age. Joyous, honest and intelligent, Scheherazade saves her life and those of countless other women through the power of her storytelling. Stories tumble over each other, stories within stories, exuberant, irreverent, thought-provoking, tender and hilarious. Song, dance, live music and circus are all a part of the potent mix.
This production of ARABIAN NIGHTS by students at Te Auaha takes you from the here and now of war-torn Iraq to the transformative magic of story and the imagination. Filled with colour and swirling movement and with the exquisite music of Clinton Zerf played live, it is a perfect show for the whole family to enjoy.
The ARABIAN NIGHTS cast of second year actors are supported by circus students as well as first year actors who both crew the show and augment the action, giving audiences the rare and exciting prospect of seeing forty actors on stage at the same time. It is the first Whitireia production on the main stage of Tapere Nui at Te Auaha, a perfect opportunity for audiences to meet the talented performers of our future stages.
