Please join us for the first of two lunchtime talks in response to Elizabeth Price’s A RESTORATION, a video installation currently on display at Adam Art Gallery. This first talk is by Dr Diana Burton, Senior Lecturer in Classics at Victoria University of Wellington.
Burton will look at the sprawling and complex ancient site of Knossos, its architecture, art, and purpose, the myths which grew up around it, and the events which brought about its downfall, and how these stories interact in A RESTORATION. In addition, she will discuss the story of its excavation and controversial restorations by Sir Arthur Evans.
Dr Diana Burton teaches courses on Greek art and society, Greek myth and religion, and death and dying. Her research explores the interaction between art and cult, death and immortality, particularly through the iconography of mythical figures, and in early Greek literature. With Jeff Tatum and Simon Perris, she recently published Athens to Aotearoa: Greece and Rome in New Zealand Literature and Society, a volume of essays on classics and classical reception in New Zealand.
