3 JUNE, 5 PM, AUCKLAND TOWN HALL
NZ Premiere & young NZ star pianist
Bach Musica NZ continues its 2018 concert series with two very distinct composers of the early 19th century in the grandiose setting and great acoustic of their musical residency at Auckland Town Hall on Sunday, 3 June at 5pm.
Bach Musica NZ is delighted to have two times Wallace National Piano Competition winner and next Gen star pianist Lixin Zhang to open the evening with Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2.
This piece, composed by the young Chopin in 1829 even before he had finished his formal education, was designed to display his mastery of the instrument. Fittingly, it is the 16-year old already highly-awarded virtuoso Lixin Zhang who presents the work of this bold, innovative pianist-turned-composer.
In the second half of the evening Bach Musica NZ introduces to Auckland audiences a New Zealand Premiere of the moving Requiem by Camille Saint-Saëns. Once described as the French Mendelssohn, the composer completed this commissioned work in eight days. It is scored for four vocal soloist, choir, large orchestra and grand organ, used to grand effect, foreshadowing his famous Organ Symphony.
For this concert Bach Musica NZ is delighted to present four of New Zealand’s finest national and international soloists: soprano Sophie Sparrow, Dame Malvina Foundation Alumna; mezzo Kate Spence, NZ Mobil Song Quest prizewinner and Winston Churchill memorial Fellowship holder, international tenor Oliver Sewell, Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and Samoan bass-baritone Joel Amosa, one of the country’s rising opera stars.
Under international conductor and Music Director Rita Paczian this promises a night not to be missed.
