International Museum Day sees the launch of Raranga Matihiko – Weaving Digital Futures
Today marks the global event, International Museum Day which aims to raise awareness about the importance of museums in society. The theme for International Museum Day 2018 is Hyperconnected Museums which aligns with the Auckland Museum’s five year strategy to engage every schoolchild and make technology an integral part of the museum experience.
International Museum Day in Aotearoa sees the launch of the Digital for All Equity initiative - Raranga Matihiko, a collaborative partnership with Te Papa, Te Kāngahu Museum of Waitangi, MTG Museum Hawkes Bay and supported by the Ministry of Education. Raranga Matihiko - weaving digital futures - provides students with the opportunity to use digital technologies to tell the stories that matter to them and their communities.
“It is our intention to reach out to the young people of Tamaki Makaurau,” says Tim Hart, Auckland Museum Director of Public Experience. “Our goal is to actively connect people through shared stories and the history of this land. The use of digital channels and technologies with the Raranga Matihiko initiative will enable us to transform education and our learning programmes for our future generations.”
Innovative digital technologies will be delivered to young people with limited digital learning opportunities, while increasing access to national and local exhibitions and collections. The collaborative nature of Raranga Matihiko serves as a platform for our tamariki to develop real-world problem-solving skills, create and learn with digital technologies. The programme will be led by learning innovation specialists across the four sites and delivered face-to-face in the museums, in schools and online.
