The video installation LUNAR REFLECTION TRANSMISSION will be bringing the magic of the moon up close and personal for a strictly limited two-day season at the Corbans Estate, Henderson. This giant cinematic experience allows Aucklanders to appreciate the grand beacon of light and mystery that is the moon.
Created by Taro Shinoda, screening times for his impressive work LUNAR REFLECTION TRANSMISSION have been updated, with free daytime screenings at 11am and 1pmon Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 May. Special ticketed performances will be held on
both nights at 8pm, featuring live musical accompaniment from French electro-acoustic musician Uriel Barthélémi, priced at $40. Barthélémi’s pounding drums and syncopated rhythms truly optimise the experience, making it reverberate for family audiences, budding
astronomers and lovers of visual art. Bookings to all sessions are essential, and open to all ages.
Projected on a giant screen, Shinoda’s film captures the moon from 12 cities around the world - including Auckland - filmed over a period of 10 years in a
breath-taking display. Audiences see the lunar surface as though landing on it, in this project inspired by Shinoda’s early childhood memories. Growing up on the other side of the planet from his mum, a young Shinoda would try to communicate with her by entrusting his messages to the moon, which he hoped she would receive when the
moon rose for her.
Like both the moon and the artist himself, LUNAR REFLECTION TRANSMISSION TECHNIQUE has circled the globe, shining a light at the Busan Biennale (Korea), theIstanbul Biennale, the EV+A Festival (Ireland), the Baltic Triennale (Lithuania), theInternational Triennale of Contemporary Art (Japan) and most startlingly at the Sharjah Biennale (Dubai), where the installation was exhibited in the middle of the Mleiha Desert.
Shinoda was the McCahon House Trust’s International Artist in Residence in 2017and this exclusive showing of his work is presented as part of Auckland Art Fair.
