A SOUNZ Commission for Emerging Players in collaboration with Orchestra Wellington and Arohanui Strings.
On 18 May, Orchestra Wellington and Arohanui Strings perform the world premiere of Infinity Mirror, a new work by
Wellington composer Simon Eastwood. The work was written specially for the two orchestras and was selected as the first
ever SOUNZ Commission for Emerging Players.
The performance will be part of Orchestra Wellington’s Symphony in the Hutt, a free family concert, at the Walter Nash
Stadium in Lower Hutt, on Friday 18 May at 7pm. The concert will also feature music from Star Wars and Moana, along with
other favourites. Orchestra Wellington, conducted by Brent Stewart, will be joined by singers Ben Patterson, Pasquale
Orchard, Lisa Tomlins and Declan Cudd. Free tickets can be collected from the Walter Nash Stadium Reception.
Simon Eastwood is a composer and bass player from Wellington, where he is currently studying for a DMA at the New
Zealand School of Music. He has been teaching bass at Arohanui Strings for nearly two years. Simon is currently
preparing to go to Alaska in July for the Composing in the Wilderness field course, in conjunction with the Fairbanks
Summer Arts Festival, after which he will spend some time developing collaborative projects in London.
Simon’s work is inspired by the infinity mirror, which is created when two reflective surfaces are placed side by side.
The infinity mirror serves as a metaphor for the inter-generational exchange that will be seen on stage with this
commission.
Arohanui Strings - Sistema Hutt Valley is a groundbreaking programme based in the Hutt Valley, creating social change
through music by providing free violins and music lessons for children in underprivileged communities.
