Press Release: Christchurch City Chorus
Christchurch City Chorus have taken out the national Sweet Adelines competition on Saturday 5 May in Wellington for the 11th time. The women’s chorus has worked hard for the win, impressing the judges with their vocal skills and barbershop harmony. Their combined scores rank the singing group among the world’s best Sweet Adelines International choruses, and puts Christchurch on the world map with this achievement.
Second place-getter was Greater Auckland Chorus.
Singing under the direction of Master Musical Director, Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, the Christchurch City Chorus is a team made up of 130 women mostly from Christchurch and beyond. Singers come from as far afield as Wellington, Napier, Nelson, Auckland, Hamilton, Dunedin, Invercargill, Melbourne and the Redlands in Australia are all happy to join and compete as the Christchurch City Chorus.
These All Blacks of singing have a solid winning streak, taking first place in every national barbershop competition they have entered since forming in 1987. This year, contestants were assessed by four international judges from the United States and Sweden, who were excited to see a performance of such a high international level. The beautiful singing and the high energy field that was delivered was thoroughly enjoyed.
As the national champion, Christchurch City Chorus will represent New Zealand at the Sweet Adelines International competition in New Orleans next year. The chorus encourages any women of all ages who love to sing in four part harmony, to join them at their FREE OPEN NIGHT on Wednesday 23 May at 8.00pm in Harmony Church 220 Antigua Street. It's a great time to find out what women in harmony can do.
