Antarctica: The first dance

Celebrating Antarctica While We Still Have It

What happens in Antarctica affects the rest of the planet … and vice versa. People don’t always make that connection. This EARTH DAY, Antarctica New Zealand urges everyone to consider how the sum of our individual choices can impact Earth’s future.” Peter Beggs, Antarctica New Zealand

The short film Antarctica: The First Dance was launched on EARTH DAY, Sunday 22ndApril in the UK on Random Acts/Channel 4, and celebrates the beauty of Antarctica while we still have. Featuring dancer Madeleine Graham amongst the austere beauty and fragility of the ice and snow structures and soundtrack music by London Grammar. In the time it takes to watch the film (4.5 minutes) it has been estimated by scientists that 860,0000 tonnes of Antarctic ice will melt. Please watch and share!

In February 2018 award-winning choreographer Corey Baker set off for Antarctica along with Madeleine Graham, dancer from Royal New Zealand Ballet. Together with Director of Photography Jacob Bryant, they created Antarctica: The First Dance, the first ever dance film made on location in Antarctica.

Director/Choreographer Corey Baker, who is renowned for creating engaging and accessible work, often in outdoor spaces says, “I believe that dance is a universal language, it can act as a bridge between people, igniting action. Antarctica: The First Dance shows up close the beauty of this incredible place, and by watching the film people can feel closer to something that may otherwise seem abstract and unconnected.

Corey continues, "Climate change knows no boundaries whether it be race, sexuality, creed or class - it will affect all. I suspect the more we all learn about global warming, together we will be able to join the movement and make life choices that help mitigate climate change impact.

We’re already committed to some ice loss because of the CO2 we’ve put into our atmosphere since the industrial revolution. But limiting global warming now will minimise the impact on Antarctica and the rest of the world. If all of the ice in Antarctica melted, sea levels could rise by 60 metres – that would flood cities like New York, New Orleans and Mumbai. Just this month Jonathan Amos at the BBC reported that data gathered from Europe’s Cryosat radar spacecraft shows some of Antarctica’s biggest glaciers are being eaten away from below by warm water.**

I made Antarctica: The First Dance to celebrate Antarctica – climate change impact is real and immediate, and there is no time to waste."
