Seven months is a long time to wait for a shot at redemption.
This Saturday Pt Chevalier finally get their opportunity, travelling away to Harold Moody Reserve to take on the Glenora Bears in a re-match of last year’s SAS Fox Memorial Premiership Grand Final, which saw the Bears produce a 26-0 shutout victory and claim their first title since 1999.
Round 1 also presents Glenora with another chance to add to their trophy cabinet, with the champion of champions Stormont Shield up for grabs, while the west Aucklanders will also put the Konica Minolta Roope Rooster (challenge trophy) on the line.
The match will be streamed live and free on aucklandleague.co.nz, with coverage from 2.00pm and the match kicking off at 2.30pm.
Elsewhere in Auckland, John Ackland’s Otahuhu will mark their return to the first division - following a one-year spell in the Crown Lift Trucks Sharman Cup - with a trip to Murray Halberg Park to face the Marist Saints.
Papakura host Mt Albert, looking to bounce back after a horror 2017 campaign which saw them miss the play-offs just a year on from winning the competition, while the Northcote Tigers are away to the Mangere East Hawks.
The Richmond Bulldogs take on the Howick Hornets at Grey Lynn Park in the remaining Round 1 fixture.
