2018 Commonwealth Games Highlights Day 2 - April 6
It was victory in the velodrome for the Kiwis during day one of competition yesterday.
Ethan Mitchell, Eddie Dawkins and Sam Webster took out New Zealand’s first gold medal with an impressive performance in the men’s Team Sprint final, and the women's Team Pursuit and Team Sprint teams both picked up silver.
1.6 million New Zealanders tune in on day one
A huge number New Zealanders are getting behind our Commonwealth Games team and cheering them on from across the ditch. Over 1.6 million viewers tuned in to TVNZ’s Games channels yesterday (1,609,806 viewers)*. Another 35,502 streamed events via tvnz.co.nz.* Over half a million were there to watch our first medal wins in the cycling (510,900).*
Today’s highlights
Cycling
The competition continues at the velodrome today. Viewers at home will be hoping for a repeat of yesterday’s winning form. The women’s Sprint qualifiers and women’s 3000m Individual Pursuit qualifiers get underway from 3pm. The men’s 4000 Individual Pursuit qualifiers will air around 7pm, followed by the men’s Keirin qualifiers. The Kiwi races will show on TVNZ 1, with the full session showing on TVNZ DUKE, LIVE and complete with local commentary from David Basheer and Paige Paterson.
Swimming
It’s a huge day in the pool, with heats for both our men and women swimmers through the afternoon on TVNZ 1. The action will really ramp up at 9.30pm when Daniel Hunter and Sam Perry compete in the Men’s 50m Butterfly final, followed by Corey Main in the men’s 100m Backstroke final around 11.30pm. Both of these races will play LIVE on TVNZ 1.
Hockey and Netball
The men are up first today with a match against Canada, LIVE on TVNZ DUKE from 1.20pm. Then it’s over to the women’s Black Sticks. They’ll be playing Ghana, LIVE on TVNZ Games Extra from 6.20pm.
The Silver Ferns also have their second game of the competition. They’re up against Wales from 2.50pm, LIVE on TVNZ Games Extra.
Basketball
After the Tall Ferns’ stellar performance last night, it’s the Tall Blacks turn. LIVE on TVNZ Games Extra from 10pm, The New Zealand men will face off against Nigeria in their first game of the competition. Local commentary will be provided by Duane Dell’Oca.
