Day One Highlights - April 5
New Zealanders stayed up late last night to watch Sophie Pascoe lead the New Zealand team into Carrara Stadium for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.
Now it’s action time! We’re launching into the first day of competition with a bang. Gymnastics, Triathlon, Swimming, Cycling, Hockey, Netball, Weightlifting, Basketball, Table Tennis and Lawn Bowls are all on the schedule for today – with Kiwis featuring in most events.
Triathlon
Watch out for the women’s Triathlon which kicks off at 11.30am, LIVE on TVNZ 1 and DUKE. Andrea Hewitt, Nicole Van Der Kaay and Rebecca Spence are competing this morning… and there are medals at stake – Let’s go Kiwis! Hewitt took out the Bronze in Melbourne 2006, and New Zealanders watching at home will be hoping Australia proves fruitful once again for this talented triathlete. The men’s Triathlon follows on from the women’s, LIVE on TVNZ 1 and DUKE from 3pm – with New Zealanders Ryan Sissons, Tony Dodds and Tayler Reid all competing.
Cycling
The action will also be ramping up in the velodrome this afternoon with Cycling qualifying events underway from 4.30pm. The full session is airing on DUKE, with local commentary by David Basheer and Paige Patterson. The New Zealand races will also appear on TVNZ 1. Tune to the exhilarating men’s Sprint qualifier just after 6.30pm across both channels. Edward Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster – all former Commonwealth Games medallists – are taking to the track.
Hockey, Netball and Basketball
The afternoon and evening will see our women’s teams in the spotlight. DUKE will have the Black Sticks’ first pool match against Scotland, LIVE from 1.20pm. On TVNZ 1 from 8.30pm, the Silver Ferns are kicking off their campaign against Uganda. This game will also be broadcast LIVE. Rounding off the evening on TVNZ Games Extra are the Tall Ferns, who will face off with Malaysia from 10.50pm.
