ARL applauds Warriors inclusion in women’s competition

The Auckland Rugby League has thrown its full support behind the New Zealand Warriors’ inclusion in the newly-formed NRL
Women’s Premiership.
The Warriors’ involvement in the concept creates new opportunities for players to achieve higher honours through the
Auckland competition, and will lift the overall standard of the women’s game in New Zealand.
While date clashes with the NRL Premiership may trigger tweaks to the 2018 Farrelly Photos Auckland Women’s Premiership
draw, ARL general manager Greg Whaiapu said that would be a small trade off.
“This is huge news not only for our current elite Auckland players, but also for the next generation coming through our
U13, U15 and U17 female grades,” Whaiapu said.
“In addition to striving for the Kiwi Ferns jersey, players will also now have the chance to play against the world’s
best right here in their own backyard.
“We also expect there will be flow-on opportunities for our local female coaches, managers and match officials.
“We know this team will have a strong Auckland flavour to it, and we can’t wait to see our players in action.”
Last year 21 of the 24 players who represented the Kiwi Ferns at the Women’s Rugby League World Cup came from the
Auckland competition.
In 2017, 12 women’s teams and over 360 players competed at senior level in Auckland, while the development U17 and U15
competitions saw a further 250 players take the field.
