Boys in the Buff! A Completely Nude Literary Event Premieres in WGTN
For the first time in Aotearoa New Zealand, completely naked men will be reading literature aloud onstage in the radical and sumptuous sensation - Naked Boys Reading! Catch our cast of slutty hunks baring it all in this unmissable celebration of naked bodies, good storytelling, and wholesome masculinity. On for one night only - Friday April 6th, 8pm at The Fringe Bar.
After two years of Naked Girls Reading in New Zealand, the team behind the beloved nationwide cabaret show figured it's about time the boys had a crack. (Or, rather, showed their cracks!) The show is exactly what is sounds like - completely naked men reading literature aloud. It's a sexy book club, a homoerotic slumber party, a sumptuous and scandalous event sure to arouse, educate and entertain all at once. Come along to experience the ancient and beautiful art of storytelling - and also, you know, butts.
The production’s star-studded cast features Luke Gumbley, a father and conflicted breadwinner; Donald James, youth educator and local musician, and; Samuel Andrews, queer sociologist and drag performer. These unclad, clever cads have picked their favourite bits of literature to recite for you. Naturally, the theme for this edition is ‘masculinity’ so expect excerpts of everything macho - from The Great Gatsby to the politics of penetration, from Grindr etiquette to patriarchal parenting, perhaps even some hunky, heroic erotica! We’ll be sauntering through the literary landscape of all things manly in an evening. It’s a night not to be missed.
“We have no idea what this show is going to be!”, says MC and producer Hugo Grrrl. “It’s a first for us and a first for New Zealand. After running shows with naked women for two years, I think having a cast of naked boys is going to be quite the culture shock! But the cast are chomping at the bit to strip off and get to some hearty discussions of masculinity, fatherhood and patriarchy - important, wholesome stuff. I think it’s going to be pretty special. A recipe for a wonderful, sexy disaster.”
Hugo Grrrl, the alter-ego of comedy and cabaret producer Gen Fowler, is the creator of the project and also produces a wide variety of other productions in Wellington and beyond including The Rocky Horror Drag Show and The Pun Battle. Grrrl is also reigning national drag king champion (‘Yes, there is such a thing!’ laughs Fowler) and was recently awarded Best Producer in The Wellington Comedy Awards 2017.
Naked Boys Reading: The NZ Premiere runs for one night only at 8pm at The Fringe Bar (Friday 6th of April). This show is one of the bi-monthly Naked Girls Reading events, and future themes include Motherhood, Food and The Occult. Pre-sale tickets are just $20 and available through Eventfinder.co.nz.
