Young Female Rodeo Star wins the Fonterra Young New Zealand
Rural Sportsperson of the Year Award 2018
Outstanding young rodeo star Teagan O’Callaghan has been crowned Rural Young Sportsperson of the Year at a gala ceremony in Palmerston North, with the judging panel chaired by rugby legend Sir Brian Lochore.
Teagan is aged 17 years and hails from Kaitaia, Northland.
She was junior barrel racing champion in 2016 but in 2017 stepped up into the adult rodeo ranks and won Rookie All Round and Rookie Barrel Racing championships.
Teagan’s all round award was competing against both males and females – the first time a young woman had won the event. Her immediate aim is to compete in the highly competitive and high profile United States rodeo circuit.
Teagan has also represented Northland at age grade football, and completed her NCEA Level 2 last year.
She is very much the modern and exciting face of New Zealand rodeo.
