Farmers Auckland CBD store abuzz for Shave for a Cure!
The clippers will be buzzing at Farmers’ Auckland CBD store on the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets this Friday March 16, when it is transformed into a pop-up barber shop with celebrity hairdressers for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand’s Shave for a Cure.
The event will be hosted by Hilary Barry from 12 to 2 pm with celebrity ‘hairdressers’, including Paul Ego and Angela Bloomfield showing off their skills with the clippers in Farmers’ front window. Well-known singer Jamie McDell will also be performing live.
Courageous shavees will include Jenny Bartlett who has participated in Shave for a Cure six times and raised nearly $18,000 for LBC. This year the event has become personal for Jenny who recently received the news her sister has myeloma.
“A few weeks ago I witnessed my sister’s hair coming out in clumps as a result of her treatment so it really bought home to me what Shave for a Cure is all about,” says Jenny.
Farmers, who are long-term supporters of LBC, are holding 17 Community Shave events over Shave week from March 19 – 25. The public can show their support by purchasing a ‘Lion Cat’ air freshener designed by well-known artist Paul Walsh. The Lion Cat which represents the bravery of everyone shaving and Kiwis living with blood cancer is being sold for $5. Customers can also elect to donate a sum of their choice when paying for their purchase.
Michael Power, Farmers’ Chief Financial Officer, says Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand is a charity close to many of the company’s 4,000 staff.
“The Shave for a Cure campaign is something our stores put huge effort into supporting each year. Understanding we are an integral part of many New Zealand communities, we are delighted to offer our store space during this campaign period, and invite the public to Community Shave events occurring at many of our stores.
“Six New Zealanders are diagnosed with a blood cancer every day. A number of our staff have personally been affected, and many of them take up the challenge to shave their heads to show solidarity.”
Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand’s CEO Pru Etcheverry, says fundraising from Shave is vital as LBC receives no government funding.
“The Farmers team put such huge effort into supporting Shave for a Cure, and we get wonderful feedback from patients that they hugely appreciate their efforts.
This generosity enables us to continue to grow our service across the country providing personalised support to families living with blood cancer and also allows us to invest in research into these diseases.”
