‘WAR HORSE, the story behind Hamilton’s War Horse Memorial’ book to be launched 10 March, 2018
A commemorative book on Hamilton’s war horse statue will be launched at the Waikato Combined Equestrian Centre,
Saturday, 10 March, 2018.
The book tells the poignant story of how the 18,000 New Zealand horses sent to the South African War and the First World
War were memorialised with a statue.
Noeline Jeffries, Waikato Combined Equestrian Group President says “the statue completion was a dream come true. These
noble creatures suffered along with our soldiers, hardships that we could never imagine and we owe it to them, as a
nation to remember their sacrifice. The launch of this book marks the completion of the War Horse Project. It features
the journey and progress from the very first concept through to the final Unveiling and it will be a reminder to the
future generations of the history of New Zealand’s War Horses.”
The book is archival and bursting with stunning colour photographs, including the special public unveiling that was held
in Memorial Park and of The Mane Event, the unique horse variety show which showcased horse breeds and their talents.
The funds from the sale of this book will go to the Waikato Equestrian Centre. Local historian Richards Stowers and TOTI
compiled the book and the Waikato Combined Equestrians intend to give copies to local Hamilton schools so that future
generations will know the story of the War Horse.
