Record Summer at Museum and Quake City
Canterbury Museum and its special exhibition Quake City (above) have had another record summer with 276,061 visitors during the last three months, 10% up on the same period last year
(2016/17: 250,526).
February 2018 smashed the previous record for the month; 94,302 people visited the Museum, a 24% increase on the
previous record of 75,840 set in February 2017.
Museum Director Anthony Wright says the recently-closed exhibition 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic proved to be a real crowd puller with locals and tourists alike. In the last week of the exhibition, which closed
Sunday, 27,374 people visited the Museum compared to 21,984 in the same week last year when the Air New Zealand 75 Years exhibition was also drawing large numbers. More than 4,000 people visited the Museum on both the Saturday and Sunday,
many specifically to see the National Geographic exhibition.
Quake City has also been attracting record numbers since it relocated to 299 Durham Street North in September 2017; 20,684 people
have visited the exhibition telling stories from the Canterbury earthquakes in the last three months, compared to 15,178
for the same period last year.
