Calling all new skiers & snowboarders
February 28, 2018: With Kiwis riding high after the recent winter Olympic Games success there's no better time to learn to ski or
snowboard.
Who knows where today’s beginner skiers and snowboarders will end up says Matt McIvor, Mt Ruapehu Marketing Manager.
"Belief is now at an all-time high that Kiwis can reach the pinnacle of snow sports success due to the amazing effort by
the New Zealand Winter Olympic Team at the recent games.”
Matt says that the athletes' success is the perfect inspiration to hit the slopes at Mt Ruapehu this season - especially
for new skiiers and snowboarders.
“With our state of the art snow factory gearing up to get started we’re again scheduled to open on Queen's Birthday
Weekend, June 2. This means first timers can learn nice and early in Happy Valley and then progress throughout the
season to make the most of winter," he says.
"It’s fun, it gets you fit and you get to play in our beautiful outdoors… it’s no wonder we’re all still addicted to
getting out on the snow up here!"
To celebrate the athletes' success Mt Ruapehu is offering a Flash Sale with half price learn to ski or snowboard
packages. "The athletes have put New Zealand Snow Sports on the map and the nation is hyped on it. We feel that there’s
no better time for people to give skiing or snowboarding a crack than this season and we're making it more accessible
with this deal."
Along with bringing home two medals, the consistent impressive performances throughout the team have shown that New
Zealand is a force to be reckoned with on the biggest stage in competitive snow sports. Beau- James Wells grabbing a 4th
place, Byron Wells making the Halfpipe final, Carlos Garcia Knight grabbing a 5th place in Slopestyle and making the Big
Air final and a healthy list of athletes who had potential to reach top 5 placings in their disciplines… the list goes
on.
“We’re all still buzzing off such an epic Winter Olympics campaign from the national team. Nico Porteous and Zoi
Sadowski-Synnott are an inspiration to all the youngsters out there wanting to ski or snowboard and proof that you can
achieve Winter Olympic glory if you put the work in and go after it."
Matt adds that it’s great to see the New Zealand public and media getting behind the athletes. "It isn't all about fun
for these competitors and we hope the public recognise the hard work they put in; the early morning starts, the rigorous
training camps, the regular injuries and sacrifices. They all are truly inspiring and we want to encourage more people
to experience skiing & snowboarding this winter."
Matt adds that spectators at Turoa Ski Area were treated to a showcase of skills from Winter Olympians Nico & Miguel Porteous & Beau-James Wells at the inaugural Tom Campbell Memorial Big Air in September last year.
