20 years of recording NZ music - 2018 NZ Composer Sessions
2018 NZ Composer Sessions in association with NZSO, RNZ Concert and SOUNZ
The 2018 NZ Composer Sessions will be rehearsed and recorded at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre this week. Each work will be performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marc Taddei, and recorded by RNZ Concert to create high quality NZ orchestral recordings.
A panel made up of representatives of the NZSO, RNZ Concert and the Composers Association of New Zealand (CANZ) selected the following works last year:
Chris Adams: Otira Gorge
Reuben Jelleyman: Hue Saturation and Brightness
Louisa Nicklin: One
Philip Norman: Fanfare for Dame Silvia Cartwright & And Soon it will be Dawn
Andrew Perkins: Three Spanish Songs
Anthony Ritchie: Albatross in Flight
Patrick Shepherd: Symphony No.1, 'Lithosphere': III
Alex van den Broek: Barbour St. Late Evening
For the second time, two orchestral works are added to the Resound Studio collection: Fanfare for Orchestra by Nigel Keay and Clockwerk by Maria Grenfell.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the project, providing NZ composers an opportunity to have their orchestral compositions workshopped and performed by a professional orchestra. The works are recorded and filmed in a professional setting and promoted to a range of orchestras and broadcasters.
The key SOUNZ project, in partnership with the NZSO and RNZ Concert, was previously known as NZSO-SOUNZ Readings (1998-2011) and NZSO-RNZ Concert-SOUNZ Recordings (2010-2016), and was re-launched as NZ Composer Sessions in 2016. So far 152 works by 65 composers have been recorded.
