Join the Bike the Trail event for a fun, family-friendly ride
Registrations are now open for this year’s free family-friendly Bike the Trail event on Sunday 4 March 2018.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 23 Jan 2017—Upper Hutt City Council’s Activation team, along with Hutt City Council and the Greater Wellington Regional Council, are again bringing this popular free cycling event, now in its ninth year, to the Wellington region.
The scenic bike ride follows the Hutt River Trail from Upper Hutt’s Harcourt Park to Hikoikoi Reserve, Petone. Hungry bikers will be able to re-fuel there after the ride and enjoy the afternoon with music, giveaways, and entertainment for the whole family. A free return transport to Stokes Valley or Upper Hutt will be available from 1.00 pm until 3.00 pm.
Families and individuals can ride the full trail of 25 km or the 12 km ride from Eastern Hutt Road in Stokes Valley. Start times from Harcourt Park vary to reduce congestion and to cater for biking groups of similar speed and ability. Faster groups will set off at 9.50am, those wanting to take their time start heading off at 10.10am, and those riding with younger children or planning a picnic along the way start at 10.30am. At the Stokes Valley start point, all riders will start in groups from 10am.
“This ride gets bigger each year and we are excited to again partner with Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council for the 2018 event,” says Activation’s Recreation Advisor Steph Reichardt. “We’re pleased it is again free for the community to join in, be active and social, while enjoying our great outdoors.”
Green Jersey Cycles are offering a special rate for those in the community that do not have bikes and wish to hire bikes for the day. These can be booked when registering online as numbers are limited.
Along with the partnership between the councils, the event is made possible with funding from Pelorus Trust, and is sponsored by Les Mills Hutt City.
Registrations for this event are now open. People are encouraged to pre-register online at www.bikethetrail.co.nz to avoid the queues on event day. There is further information available on the Bike the Trail website, including about how to rent a bike, the return transport and more.
