Bucket list 2018: Trek to Everest to celebrate the 65th anniversary of historic ascent
As the New Year approaches and we dust off the old bucket list, one group of Kiwis is making 2018 the year they take the
trek of a lifetime to reach Everest Base Camp on May 29 – the 65th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing
Norgay’s historic ascent.
The Summit Anniversary Trek, run jointly by the Himalayan Trust and Kathmandu Summit Club, is a 19-day journey through
the mountains, which will include time volunteering at a local school and building a safe water system at a remote
village.
“We are excited to be able to offer Kiwis the chance to continue Sir Ed’s legacy in the mountains, getting to know and
working alongside the local people,” says Prue Smith, General Manager of Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan Trust.
The trekkers will also share dinner with the medical team at the famous Khunde hospital built by Sir Ed, and meet some
of the local Sherpa people who have played a significant role in the Himalayan Trust’s work over the years.
“This is a chance for Kiwis to hear directly from the local people the impact of Sir Ed’s legacy in the Everest region.
Combining this with the 65th anniversary of the ascent offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the remarkable and
lasting friendship between New Zealand and Nepal.”
The Himalayan Trust has been working in Nepal since 1960, when Sir Edmund Hillary built the first school in the Everest
region.
The trekkers taking part will also help raise funds towards the Himalayan Trust’s work to bring quality education, safe
water and better healthcare to remote communities in the Everest region.
