Established parameters imitate seemly familiar laws and systems to create a doorway, once in, any approximations are
then roundhouse kicked in the face. Fumbling and quivering one is left disoriented; marks form images and then move from
marks to forms, then forms form spaces, then form to forms in space and back to marks. In true form, the works give the
run-around, leave you guessing and keep you on your toes.
Having trained at the same dojo the three painters share a similar disposition. One with their technique, technique is
one their content – which inevitably shines from within like a heartbeat. Thus, with life, each work is of its own
character, consequently complex, and difficult to perceive with preconceived thinking.
Brendon Leung: ZENINIMALISM

In the reflection of the inner nature of things, they saw the thing itself, the whole. The whole which is entirely
different from the sum total of its parts. The whole which is indivisible and cannot be divided.
There is an interdependent nature between the ceramics, paintings and the viewer that evokes an energy and a vibration
within the room. A vibration that attempts to elicit momentary states of awareness within the viewer and of the space
itself, to serve as a reminder that tranquility can be found within a mindful existence in the world.
Brendon Leung explores the correlations between minimalist arts with eastern philosophical ideas which he draws from
living in a westernised art society and being raised in a Chinese household. Influenced by nature, space and the human
condition, his works feature pared-back paintings made with unconventional materials and soft forms of ceramics. The
artist concentrates on ideas of imperfection, impermanence and atmospheric qualities of the material to evoke momentary
states of awareness within the viewer and the physical space itself. Born in 1994 in Auckland, New Zealand, the artist
is currently pursuing his Master of Design at Unitec Institute of Technology.
