SOLD OUT! High School Musical
Extra Show Added After Tickets Sell Out in A Day
We are all in this together!
When Disney’s High School Musical hit TV screens in the US eleven years ago, more than seven and a half million people tuned in.
Although fewer than that will head along to see the Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and Christ’s College Junior school production of High School Musical (Junior) which opens on Wednesday 22 November, the numbers keep increasing and Director Hannah Clarkson (Rangi Ruru Dance and Drama Teacher) has today confirmed that an extra show has been added to the season.
“With more than two weeks to go until opening night, all five scheduled shows sold out in a day, when tickets went on sale on November 1. So, an extra show has been confirmed for 8pm on Friday 24th November and tickets will go on sale at 5pm today,” she says. Director of Theatre Arts at Rangi Ruru, Peter Rutherford, says he’s thrilled with the speedy sell-out.
“High School Musical remains one of the world’s most popular TV films ever and I am sure that has played a significant part in tickets selling out in a day,” he says. “We also have a hugely supportive school community however selling 720 tickets in a day is quite an achievement,” he says.
Head of Drama at Christ’s College, David Chambers says it’s a hugely “fun show” that will have everyone smiling.
“I think parents and others will be surprised how well they know the music,” he says. “It’s funny too and I know audiences will have a great time.”
Musical Director, Rangi Ruru’s Henare Kaa says everyone have been humming the music since rehearsals began.
“The songs are really catchy, I can’t get them out of my head. The cast and crew are having a ball in rehearsals and we can’t wait until opening night.”
With a plot described by the author and numerous critics as a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, High School Musical is a story about two high school juniors from rival cliques – Troy Bolton captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a shy transfer student who excels in mathematics and science (Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens in the movie).
Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical, and this causes division among all the school's students. Despite other students' attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella resist peer pressure and rivalry, inspiring others along the way not to "stick to the status quo".
High School Musical (Junior) is a one hour production with no intermission.
