How to DIY Bike'vember 2017
“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race!” H.G. Wells
This November, we invite you to “do it yourself” and create your own Bike’vember. There’s so many ways to be inspired to get on your bike and go by people powered transport to get around town and our beautiful surrounds. Here’s a start - get inspired by checking out our new video from Bike’vember 2016 created by Stash Media Worx and sponsored by Lake Wanaka Tourism.
This year, Bike'vember won't be holding any official events. But don’t let that stop you - instead, we welcome you to choose your own adventure – for ideas reviewwww.bikevember.nz or check out our Facebook page. For example, challenge yourself to go by bike for 30 days, join a group or organise a social ride to Glendhu Bay via Rippon return via Edgewater for High Tea. Make a day of it, you’re welcome to invite fellow Bike’vember members to join in the fun. Or perhaps create and post your favourite commuter route to school or from work, or simply go by bike to the shops instead of taking your car this month. Just add your event to the Bike'vember calendar and rally hundreds of like-minded local cyclists to join you via the Bike'vember Facebook page.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for external motivation and to keep you honest for 30 days of cycling, then we recommend you sign up to “The Aotearoa Bike Challenge”https://www.lovetoride.net/nz held in February 2018 – it’s NZ Transport Agency’s annual national bicycle commuter campaign. Or check out our “30 Reasons to Bike” onbikevember.nz
Bike’vember is a spring festival of cycling and walking, initiated by the Wanaka community in November 2016 – we encourage all to go by bicycle or other human powered transport for the 30 days of November and beyond. Our 2016 survey feedback showed that thanks to Bike’vember “80% of our 230 participants significantly used their bikes more in November 2016” than they otherwise would have.
Bike’vember is all about helping people change their travel behaviour, with the aim to create a cycling town – a happy town with healthier people, quieter roads, stronger communities, better air to breathe – all-round, a nicer place to live and visit.
