John Campbell – International Presenter of the Year
RNZ National’s Checkpoint presenter, John Campbell, has won the 2017 AIB International Presenter of the Year Award. The announcement was made this morning (NZ time) at a gala dinner held by the Association of International Broadcasters (AIB) in London.
The annual AIB awards are presented for the very best in factual TV, radio and online programming and production. The AIB represents major broadcasters from 30 countries serving audiences of hundreds of millions around the world each week.
International judges for Presenter of the Year in the audio category look for someone who makes a real impact with their voice whether online or on the radio, they said
“We are looking for someone whose knowledge and interest is clearly demonstrated in their presenting style, and someone who lets their guests and interviewees take centre stage “
Acknowledging John Campbell’s achievement, RNZ CEO, Paul Thompson, said
“This award is well deserved international recognition for an outstanding public broadcaster. His ability to relate to his audience on a very personal level and to combine this with his passion for the medium comes across clearly to the audience. It’s also recognition for a very dedicated and hard-working team from across RNZ who contribute to the multimedia Checkpoint programme for 90 minutes every weekday evening. “
RNZ enhanced its international reputation with finalists in two other categories at the awards – the highly rated podcast series The 9th Floor was recognised in the Video category, and RNZ’s coverage of the Kaikōura earthquake in the Daily Journalism section.
