Auckland Museum Welcomes Back the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year Exhibition
See the best photography of New Zealand in the 2017 New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Yearexhibition on display at Auckland Museum this summer.
Opening on Friday 15 December, 65 images will be displayed on backlit panels to reveal every stunning detail - a first
for this homegrown exhibition.
The exhibition continues the festival of photography at Auckland Museum after the highly popular Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition closes on Sunday 3rd December, which nearly 200,000 people have visited already.
“The people of Auckland clearly enjoy photographic exhibitions and we are thrilled to bring this breath-taking
exhibition to Aucklanders for free,” says Auckland Museum Director Dr. David Gaimster. “These images portray the
diversity, colour and richness of New Zealand life, and the Museum, the hub of Auckland’s collections and collective
story-telling, is excited to share them.”
From wild animals to lush landscapes, stunning portraits and hard-hitting photo essays, the exhibition features the best
photography of 2017 from New Zealand, as judged by New Zealand Geographic.
“With 65 finalists, 2017 is by far the biggest pool in the history of the Photographer of the Year competition. The
standards have increased year on year, and we’ve also seen the photography evolve with changing technology and changing
visual approaches,” says New Zealand Geographic publisher James Frankham.
“We’re seeing photographers depict our society and environment in a way that acknowledges its complexity and diversity…
it’s as if we’ve matured as a nation, and our visual culture has reflected that,” he says.
The winners of the competition will be announced on December 13, including the overall Nikon Photographer of the Year.
The public can cast their votes for the Panasonic People’s Choice award at the exhibition and online, and the winner will be announced in February.
