Nelson Arts Festival starts this week!

2017
The 23rd Nelson
Arts Festival kicks off this week, with song, dance,
theatre, comedy, literature and art all arriving on our
doorstep.
Nelson’s reputation as an art’s capital is hard to dispute with the breadth of shows coming our way over the next couple of weeks.
The Festival kicks off on Wednesday with family show Sunny Ray and the Magnificent Moon (Suter Theatre 1pm), the world-class That Bloody Woman (Theatre Royal, 7.30pm) and the hilarious The Orchid and the Crow (Suter Theatre, 7pm).
From there on it’s a joy ride in to two weeks of fabulous, energising, hilarious, thought provoking, challenging and uplifting shows.
“I love the fact that we get this eclectic mix of local, national and international acts,” says Councillor Gaile Noonan, Chair of the Community Services committee.
“The Page & Blackmore Readers and Writers programme has local stars like Nicola Galloway alongside nationally renowned writers like Steve Braunias and Catherine Chidgey. And we’re so lucky to have shows like Hudson & Halls Live!, Valerie and Play On showing on our home stages.”
The festival runs across Labour Weekend, and winds up with the Masked Parade and Carnivale on Friday 27 October.
“The Arts Festival is always a watershed for me,” says Gaile. “It marks springtime in an unforgettable way, and from there on it’s not long till our glorious summer. The Festival is a wonderful celebration of everything that makes Nelson great.”
