SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s penguins try their flipper at new Monopoly edition
Auckland, Friday 6 October 2017: SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s resident sub-Antarctic penguins have been given the
opportunity to be the first in New Zealand to play the newest edition of Monopoly which now - much to the penguin’s
delight - features an official penguin player token.
Just like households across the country, the Gentoo penguins squabbled over who got the first try at the
penguin-friendly version of the game, while the King penguins acted as the unofficial judicators, watching on from the
sidelines.
Keepers from the Auckland attraction placed some of the more iconic Monopoly board spaces on the ice as well as a
life-size Penguin token, which saw the Gentoo penguins quickly waddle up to investigate the penguin intruder.
Today’s Monopoly game formed part of SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s dedicated Penguin enrichment program whereby keepers
enrich the penguin’s environment with objects and activities which stimulate natural behaviour. Gentoo penguins in
particular are very curious so were inquisitive with the new items introduced into their display.
SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium Curator, Andrew Christie said; “Our birds are always a little shy at first, but the
curious nature of Gentoo penguins means they warm up quite quickly whenever you introduce anything new, and it’s always
amusing watching them play!”
“The Gentoo penguins were quick to poke around at the Monopoly board pieces with their beaks and loved checking
themselves out in the reflection of the life-size penguin token.”
Some of the Gentoo penguins were too distracted to participate in the game, as they were busy guarding their nest and
pebbles from other penguins as the attraction’s breeding season swings into gear, with the hope there will be the
pitter-patter of little Gentoo feet in the coming months.
A New Zealand past-time favourite, Monopoly has been known to make or break households but is the ultimate family fun
for people of all ages. The classic Monopoly edition with all-new player tokens is available in all major toy retailers
across the country from today.

major toy retailer between the 10/10/17 – 31/12/17 and present their receipt to SEA LIFE to redeem the special offer of
