Sir Ray Avery “comes out of retirement” as sculptor to create work for Lifepod Art Sale

More than 50 acclaimed artists have contributed artworks to the Lifepod Art Sale, in support of Sir Ray Avery’s ongoing fundraising campaign for Medicine Mondiale’s Lifepod Incubators. Their generosity is part of a wider campaign to help keep little hearts beating across the Pacific region.

The combined value of the works donated is $400,000 and includes works by Emma Bass, Fatu Feu’u, Paul Hartigan, Ann Robinson, Jeffrey Thomson and Denys Wakins. Even Sir Ray has got in on the action, “coming out of retirement” to create metal sculpture ‘The Birds’, valued at $18,000. Sir Ray’s sculpture comprises nine 3D printed Birds with a mathematical algorithm, which demonstrates why birds fly in a V-formation.

“I’m coming out of retirement,” said Sir Ray. “Most people would not be aware, that in a previous life I was a successful artist and sculptor, so I have created a sculpture especially for the exhibition; probably the last one I shall ever do, so hopefully it will have some intrinsic value. Perhaps like Leonardo da Vinci, you can’t separate the artist from the scientist,” said Sir Ray.

Artworks contributed to the Lifepod Art Sale include carvings, ceramics, digital/print, glassware, jewellery, paintings, photography and sculptures. There is even have a two-metre tall Rocket Ship by David McCracken.

The Lifepod Art Sale commences on Opening Night, Wednesday 11 October at Mossgreen Webb’s Gallery, 23 – 25 Falcon Street Parnell at 6pm. Viewings and Sale continue through Thursday 12 October to Saturday 14 October, from 10am to 5pm each day. The online catalogue can be viewed here: https://www.medicinemondiale.org/.

They represent the best that we can be as a species so it’s fantastic that people can buy Artworks at the Exhibition which they can love and cherish, and at the same time contribute to helping to keep little hearts beating throughout the Pacific,” said Sir Ray Avery.
