Spring for Kaibosh musical fundraiser brings back the feel-good factor
Dig out the jandals, dust off the sunnies, and get ready to shake off the winter blues at Spring for Kaibosh, the annual
musical celebration in aid of Wellington’s food rescue charity on Saturday 14 October.
The Southern Cross plays host for the third year running, with the 4pm kick-off the best time to rock up if you want to
enjoy a sliver of Welly sunshine in their ever-popular garden bar.
The centre stage is set for a musical extravaganza featuring local favourites Vanessa Stacey & Lisa Tomlins, Ed Zuccollo, Justin Firefly Clarke, Lost Bird, Martin Andrews & the B-Sides, and George Young who is riding high after releasing his new EP. Media Ray will once again dazzle with her
extra special VJ show, while Radio Active FM’s inimitable Redbird Jnr returns as MC. DJs will keep toes tapping in the
garden bar all day and then inside until the wee early hours.
Wellington Mayor Justin Lester will hammer it up as auctioneer for hotly contested lots donated by artists Kelly
Spencer, Flox and Deano Shirriffs, Beervana, Beers at the Basin, Archetype Books, Weta Cave and numerous other local
businesses. All proceeds from lots auctioned on the day and online through Trade Me will go straight into the
fundraising pot.
Kaibosh’s coffers will also be topped up by koha entry, raffles, a big splash of cash from the Southern Cross, and sales
of beer donated by Yeastie Boys and Black Dog. The feel-good factor will be amped up by a lively dance floor, with spot
prizes for the Best Movers & Groovers as well as the Most Outrageous Outfits. All children in fancy dress will receive a special prize.
Aiming for zero food poverty and zero food waste, Kaibosh is the Wellington region’s homegrown food rescue charity, with
bases in Mt Cook and Lower Hutt.
Each month, more than 40 businesses donate up to 20 tonnes of surplus, high-quality food – that’s twice as much as two
years ago – which are collected and allocated by more than 165 volunteers. That equates to 57,000 meals, which are
distributed via 60 other local charity organisations to feed up to 5000 people each week.
Although food contributors and volunteers are crucial to Kaibosh, it also takes cold hard cash to keep it running. Every
$20 raised at Spring for Kaibosh allows the charity to provide 20 meals to people in our community that need it most.
Kaibosh General Manager Matt Dagger is looking forward to this year’s event personally as well as professionally. “It
will be fantastic if we surpass last year’s tally of $8000 raised, but I also love Spring for Kaibosh because it’s a
chance for the people involved with it to come together for a good time while supporting the important work we’re all a
part of.’
