“A place where there isn’t any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto?”
- Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
The band released their debut album A Trillion Shades of Happy in 1992. Their first single "Trippin'" was recorded at Airforce Studios (Auckland), with the drum track done in one take. The song went to #1 in New Zealand. Now, fast-forward 25 odd years or so and the band is back performing on stage together, shooting music videos and releasing new music. Well, kind of. While the four previously unreleased tracks on their new EP are all either a quarter of a century old, or reworked songs from the same era, Push Push aren’t ruling out the possibility of releasing fresh material in the days ahead. They’ve performed with The Darkness on a three-date tour in 2017 and have several shows lined up for the upcoming summer too, so look out, Push Push are back!
Korean-Italian Young Kim began DJing professionally in the late 90s during his university years in London, where thanks to his residencies for two of the top psytrance events (Chichime and Fairy Tales), he enjoyed a major presence during the psychedelic renaissance of London’s early noughties. Since then, for well over a decade, Young has consistently performed across the planet for the world’s most prestigious, as well as truly underground dancefloors, as Etnicanet Records’ musician, DJ, and label manager, showcasing a unique blend of Eastern charisma and Mediterranean waywardness.
In today’s electronic music world there are not many artists who can lay claim to a legacy like that of DJ T. (real name Thomas Koch). Born in Dusseldorf, his parents’ record collection inspired DJ T.’s love affair with the hypnotic grooves of disco during his formative years. He began an obsessive quest to collect music, feeding his soul with everything from disco and hi-nrg, through to early hip hop and electro, soul, funk and RnB. The groovy, infectious rhythms of all those genres continues to permeate into the music he makes and plays today. DJ T.’s reputation for being a master selector has been cemented by his superlative collection of music. A highly-skilled DJ, producer and an A rep with an uncanny ability to discover new talent, DJ T. is a master selector and one of the industry’s most influential figures.
Appearing as MC Nad, Scalper began his musical career performing in the underground hip hop crew Made In Britain (MIB). Their track ‘Break The Crunch’ took the group to number five in the Kiss 100FM (UK) underground rap charts in 1991. Later in the decade Scalper as a live vocalist in the British-based multi-ethnic hip hop world fusion music group Fun-Da-Mental. The group were well known for their heavily political attitude, strong Islamic affiliation and energetic fusion of Eastern and Western musical forms. Multiple releases and tours later, Scalper is one of the must see artists of this festival.
Famed for being one of the world’s first international touring female loop artists, Mihirangi has inspired audiences around the globe. There isn’t much this songstress doesn’t have in her toolbox of musical magic – weaving live loops of vocals, intricate harmonies, taonga puoro (traditional Maori instruments), guitar, keyboards, world percussion with beatboxing, drums and earth-shaking basslines. A born entertainer and an artist-activist, Mihirangi’s essential ingredients are her naturalness, her infectious laughter and the ease with which she shares her authenticity.
Franko Heke is on a mission to raise consciousness through his music and workshops. Drawing on ancient mantra in combination with his own cultural roots, Franko’s devotional sessions are bound to coax your own divine voice into the open with his distinct fresh sounds for today. With years of touring rock music under his belt, Franko’s compass has drawn him north towards a movement, which brings people together, celebrating our unique gifts, our connection to one another and to mother earth. "It is time that we bridge the division between artist and audience to become one".
