Farmers with Hospice New Zealand Pick Talented Young Designer to Create a Gorgeous New Annual Christmas Bauble, Fundraising for Those in Need!
With a breath-taking design championing the Tui and Pohutukawa Tree, young designer Jemma Smith follows FLOX and Michel Tuffery in taking up the honour of designing the annual Farmers Hospice Christmas Bauble. A must-have for the Christmas season, these baubles will be sold byFarmers stores throughout New Zealand with100% of the $10 purchase price going directly to the hospice in each store’s region – supporting local communities throughout Aotearoa.
In her early twenties, Smith is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. She won the chance to take up this project from a bevy of young hopefuls all keen to work on such a feel-good project.
‘This project was perfect for me as my work is already heavily influenced by nature, so the design process was very seamless and enjoyable. Not to mention the fact that it was going towards an amazing cause!’ Smith says.
Her design features two Tuis facing each other as a symbol of love and support - a perfect fit for the philosophy of Hospice New Zealand. ‘The Pohutukawa - our National Christmas tree was an obvious choice for the Tuis to reside in, with the striking red of the flower being a symbol of love’, says Smith.
Hospice New Zealand aims to help people make the most of their lives; to live every moment in whatever way is important to them. Kiwis of all ages living with a life-limiting condition – such as heart failure, motor neurone disease, MS or cancer – can access and benefit from hospice services. Hospice care has a unique whole person approach – which means physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs are equally important – a multidisciplinary team provides care to a person who is dying and their families and friends as well, both before and after death.
Many people think of hospice services as just a building, when in fact it is a philosophy of care. Most hospice services in New Zealand have inpatient facilities, but the majority of people are cared for in their own homes. This vital service to New Zealanders receives some funding from Government, but financial support from the community is essential to meet the shortfall every year.
Alongside these specially designed baubles each Farmers store will have a Tree of Remembrancewhere, for a small donation, visitors can write a personal message on a card to hang on the tree. The Tree of Remembrance is an opportunity to remember someone special in the lead up to Christmas.
