SCOUTS New Zealand launch te reo Māori Scout Law and Promise to celebrate Māori language week
SCOUTS New Zealand are today launching a te reo Māori translation of their Scout Law and new Promises to honour Māori
language week, 11-17 September 2017.
After an extensive consultation, SCOUTS New Zealand launched English versions of a new Scout and new Kea Promise earlier
in the year. The wording of the new Promises seeks to be more inclusive and holistic.
Making the Scout Promise and pledging to uphold the Scout Law are fundamental to being a Scout. To make that pledge in
te reo Māori is now an option for Scouts across New Zealand, who will now be able recommit to their new Promise in te
reo Māori.
“Our members hold the Scout Law and Promise very dearly, and so we have taken our time to ensure the translation we were
sought was fitting”, says SCOUTS New Zealand National Commissioner, Clarke Truscott.
“Resources and posters in te reo Māori have been sent to all of our 362 Scout Halls across the country.
“We have also made recordings, so members can practice.
“We are extremely grateful to Justin Puna, Eruera (Eru) Ruwhiu, both graduates of te Panikiritanga o te reo, and te reo
Māori student Charmaine Brown for gifting SCOUTS New Zealand these precious words,” says Clarke.
