Best-selling feminist author Clementine Ford in Auckland

Best-selling feminist author Clementine Ford in Auckland this week

Auckland Women’s Centre is thrilled to host an evening with one of Australia’s most well-known feminist thinkers and author of best-selling book “Fight Like a Girl”, Clementine Ford, this Wednesday 13th September.

Clementine, who fearlessly challenges issues of gender inequality through her writing and has a large and loyal readership in Australia and worldwide, will speak about the rise in online

misogyny and how to combat it.

Recent research reveals that 72 percent of New Zealand women under the age of 30, and 52 percent of all Kiwi women, have experienced some form of online harassment. Their experiences ranged from trolling and nude pics to character assassinations, threats of physical violence, rape and even death.

“Online misogyny is so prevalent and it is a reflection of the real world misogyny that women in NZ and globally, are still having to put up with in 2017,’ says Auckland Women’s Centre (AWC) spokesperson, Nicola Brebner.

Ms Brebner says evidence suggests trolls tend to target women who speak out in particular. “Strong women like Clementine Ford who stand up to online misogynists every single day are helping all women in the long run.”

Donations raised from the evening will go towards the Auckland Women’s Centre. Following its recent cut in government funding the Centre now receives no government funding.

AWC chairperson, Mira Taitz says: “We are absolutely thrilled to host Clementine and it comes at a much needed time for the centre. In June, our government funding was cut which resulted in us having to

significantly reduce our Single Mums service which has been running for 6 years and helped more than 600 families every year across Auckland.”

The event, which is expected to be a sell-out, will take place on Wednesday 13th September, 7pm, at the Western Springs Community Hall, Auckland.
