Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund Applications Open

Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund applications open

Applications for funding for events in 2018 that commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi open on Monday 21 August.

The Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund invites applications from groups hosting community events which promote nation building through wide community participation, and encourage the celebration of an inclusive New Zealand identity.

The Fund is administered by Manatū Taonga, Ministry for Culture and Heritage and decisions are made by a panel which includes people from Government, local government, Māori and ethnic community groups.

“Projects that reflect a partnership between iwi, marae, local government, and community groups are particularly encouraged,” says Imelda Bargas, Acting Manager Heritage Operations, Manatū Taonga.

In 2017 the Fund supported community events throughout the country held on marae, river banks and in parks and museums – all helping to build the connection between local and national Te Tiriti o Waitangi celebrations.

“Other community events this year included music festivals, Māori arts and crafts days, Treaty and rangatahi forums, events for migrant communities, tours and cultural performances,” Ms Bargas said.

”For 2018 the Fund decision panel is interested to hear from applicants who are deepening and broadening Treaty of Waitangi conversations and understanding within their communities.

“For example we are particularly looking for events encouraging participation by people from a range of ages and ethnicities, and events that build the general awareness of the Treaty and what it means for all New Zealanders.”
