2017 Torpedo7 Peak to Peak - here we come
Weather forecast
Weather forecast is
not so great but remember to check out the Remarkables forecast on Saturday
morning.
If the field is open - the race is on (bring your wind and rain coat) Snow forecast down to 1000meters on Met Service (the base area Remarkables is 1622m) So remember to bring chains and give your self enough time
Registration
It is easiest
is to register at the Torpedo7 shop on Friday night between
6pm and 7.30pm. Then it's done and dusted. Otherwise
register (or enter) at Remarkables on the
day.
Where are the women - out voting for
Jacinda
It seems that this year we have a lack
of women racing in the teams division. Last year was
extraordinary with 11 teams racing in this division - this
year we have just two teams registered at the
moment.
Calyspo Ski trail - here it is.
Starts from top of
the lookout and run down to the equipment etc then down the
trail ………..
NOTE: changeover to bikes is at base area. Bring the bikes up onto the snow and put them by the Shadow Chair drive - inside the corral
ONLINE ENTRIES are
now closed.
Enter at Torpedo7 Friday night or Remarkables
on the day
The Race Part One
On the Mountain
We
recommend you come up early as it avoids any last minute
hiccups.
Please park as directed by parking crew.
If you haven't registered at the Torpedo7 shop the night before, then head straight upstairs in the main building then right: we will be there waiting for you in the back corner, strictly from 10am to 11am.
Come up early to pick up your
bib, listen to the briefing (11.15am), and get ready to get
on the lift to head to the start line (11.30am). The lift is
open for us from 11.30 to 11.40 only. One ride with
bib.
It takes a while to have all of you at the top for a
12 o'clock start - do not underestimate the time needed, or
you'll miss out.
Our slope of choice is Calyspo
Start Time:
12:00 - on foot / run to the skis
At our
gathering spot on top of the world, we can normally look
across to the finish line on Coronet Peak while we wait on
final road clearance from the nzski crew.
As per our
tradition we will allow the 'over 50's' and under 16’s a
hundred meters head start in the run to the skis /
boards.
At the bottom of the ski run, it is usually very chaotic. We will try to get your time, but this year we will only be trying to get the order as you will all be close together.
Getting off the
Mountain
We have 10kms of tar although the top
6kms is well covered by gravel, and the bottom 4kms has some
grit on it in places, but have a good look at it on the way
up the hill.
The Main Road, State Hwy 6
-- you have 'no rights' the traffic has right of way.
Enter the highway with care. !!!!!!!
The
ski field road is officially closed to uphill traffic, but
always be aware of a ‘rogue car’ that somehow escapes.
NORMAL ROAD RULES APPLY.
Cross the bridge using the
footpath, up and then down immediately onto the
waterfront.
The Race Part 2
Frankton
Beach
It is also quite chaotic at the bike /
kayak transition, remember to slow down and get off your
bike at the transition itself. You'll need to get into your
kayak (individual) or pass your bib (team, as you would have
at the previous transition too).
The kayak to Queenstown Beach can be as pleasant as it can be brutal, depending on the wind factor. We have contingency plans in place when it is too rough, refer to the Q&A below.
The
Paddle
The lake may be rough - stay close to the
shore if you are uncertain.
Safety boats on the lake
include the harbour master and two other boats, including
Kawarau Jet.
If you need help, raise your paddle for
assistance.
Queenstown Beach
Once on
the beach, the mayhem joyously continues with plenty of
competitors disembarking at the same time, sometimes
frantically trying to find their team mate or assistants on
the beach. So why don't you have a plan, and decide
beforehand that you would land dead centre, to the right or
to the left of where the "landing zone" is. There is
bunting, flags and officials showing the way through the
timing tent, don't miss it or you won't have a
time.
Assistants are encouraged to pick up kayaks and
paddles straight away as it gets congested very
quickly.
Best to park in the Gardens and don't come
downtown.
Run Leg
On the next leg (and
indeed all legs), we are asking support crews and followers
in their cars NOT TO stop on the road as it is very busy and
becomes a hazard for all participants and motorists.
Runners, this leg is deceptively not as flat as it would
seem when you drive in your car.
Swiss Bel-Hotel
Coronet Peak
Last transition in front of the
Swiss BelHotel Coronet Peak and you are on your way to the
top. Most years road bikes can be used, alternatively the
mountain bike does a good job. The choice is yours but once
you have chosen your bike, you have to stick with
it. Support crews and followers, if you want to
stop and watch on that leg use the chain bays only. Remember
to drive with care and safety at all times.
Up the
hill on the bike.
Enjoy the ride. The steepest
part is of course at the bottom - get into your rhyme and
just pretend you are chasing Froome or Quintana in the Tour
de France (the gradients are generally steeper on
Coronet)
The finish line is situated on the ski field, meaning as you reached the Coronet Peak drop off area, you will stick to the lane marked for you and follow directions to the finish line.
Questions &
Answers
Q. Just wondering about the rules for
the ski leg? Is it necessary to use skis or a snowboard or
are other modes of transport acceptable, eg a sled
etc?
A. any sliding equipment is accepted but a sled must
be tied to the racer
Q. For the kayak, is it ok to use a
surf ski? or are there any restrictions on the type of kayak
used?
A. No restrictions on kayaks
Q: Will there be
time for someone to ski the first section and then drive
down to the kayak section before their partner (doing the
first bike section) arrives, or is the road closed or the
biking too fast?
A: The connection is extremely tight and
not recommended. Find another kayaker or use the 'virtual
kayaker' ie throw your bib over the next departing kayak and
pick it up again in Queenstown Beach.
Q.Just wondering if
there are any rules on using iPods or Mp3 players in any of
the P2P legs?
A. The answer is No ipods or MP3 players
allowed
Q. Do you have to buy a ski pass for the day to
get to the start line or do you have an agreement that
allows competitors access to the start line.
A. The bib
allows competitors one lift on the chair to get to the start
line
Q: What is the kayak course if the lake is too
rough?
A: If the conditions on the lake are too rough, we
shorten the kayak leg from Frankton beach to just before the
Gardens area so we stay on the Frankton arm rather than
around the gardens to Qtn Beach. We advise paddlers to stay
close to the shore.
If the winds are too strong and it is
borderline dangerous, we would change the leg into a run
along the Frankton track.
Q.: Do I have to wear the bib on
the outside for the lake section.
A: Yes please. I know
some don’t like the xtra time it takes but it is much
easier identifying you in photos for the press or when the
rescue boat pulls you aboard.
Q: Can you please confirm
how many of us need to be there for the registration
at
Torpedo7 on Friday from 6pm to 7.30pm, and how many
for the briefing up the Remarks on Saturday morning (at
11.15am sharp).
A: One person needs to register at
Torpedo7 and then just the skier and downhill mtn biker need
to be at the briefing at the Remarks. The members not
attending the briefing must read the written Waiver and
briefing sheets one available on the web site.
