Mermaidens “Perfect Body” Out Today On Flying Nun Records
Today, Mermaidens share their breathtaking new album Perfect Body. The album is available to stream over at The Beat. The album "flips between queasy and dreamy and all out noise and it’s all captured with a live feeling raw edge."
Hot off the press and it’s already making waves in heavy-hitting corners of the global music industry. “[Perfect Body] should prove to be one of the summer’s most brilliant long-players," waxed Gold Flake Paint. "Warm harmonies, dreamlike lyrics and hypnotic verbal repetition dance with darkly atmospheric riff-driven melodies," said The 405.
Mermaidens burst onto the scene with their widely acclaimed debut EP O in 2014 and went on to release their debut album Undergrowth in 2016. As a result, they were offered dozens of shows and international support slots, which led to them being picked up by Flying Nun Records. The Wellington trio offer a mesmerising dip into the realms of post-punk and psych, defined by intricate songwriting, boldly raw – yet increasingly refined – studio production, and a hypnotic live synergy that leaves audiences enchanted.

Perfect Body features many of the familiar characteristics of the Mermaidens’ sound, with twinkly, reverb-laden guitar lines, rich vocal harmonies and vibrant drums. They have expanded on these sounds, bringing in even more dynamic elements, building richer melodic layers and a wider range of guitar textures, as they explore different levels of dissonance. The record is already garnering rave reviews from around the globe. God is in the TV gave the record a staggering 9/10. "Perfect Body is a delicate filigree of an album... the New Zealand trio tackle themes of personal and artistic growth as well as the acceptance of maturity... It is, in fact, quite perfect."
Each song bursts with energy and variety, with contrasting light and dark, and they’ve left space for mellow and brooding instrumentals underpinning a powerful vocal melody. "Noisy, scratchy, enigmatic songwriting,” praised Clash magazine.
Band member Gussie Larkin explains further: "Perfect Body was written over a few months in many different spaces around Wellington - we jammed out ideas in our freezing practice space in Newtown, recorded snatches of vocal melodies into our cellphones on long walks home, and stewed over lyrics up until recording them in the studio.
"We set out to take the sound which we were known for from our previous material and mess with it. We wanted to take the listener on a journey where there are a few islands of stability - perhaps a catchy melody, a familiar chord progression or a danceable drum beat. But before they can get comfortable they’re dragged away to the depths of off kilter time signatures, sparse drums and caustic melodies."
