From the Rivers to the Shore & the Flyway Print Exchange Migrates to Depot Artspace From 29 JULY – 16 AUGUST

Devonport, Auckland – From the Rivers to the Shore and the accompanying exhibition, The Flyway Print Exchange, will launch at Depot Artspace on Saturday 29 July at 2pm.

From the Rivers to the Shore curated by Devonport printmaker Celia Walker, brings together over 40 printmakers from the far north to the deep south of New Zealand, whose art explores the connectivity of place through migratory bird patterns.

“Shorebirds rank amongst our most endangered species, and can be found right on our doorstep. My aim for the exhibition is to draw attention to the threats these birds face, while celebrating the connections they provide through their migratory journeys”, says Walker.

The shell banks and tidal reaches of Shoal and Ngataringa Bay, on Auckland’s North Shore, host a wealth of bird species that change with the seasons, with many southern visitors over winter, including the South Island pied oystercatcher, pied stilt, and black-billed gull

On August 13 a presentation on Shore Birds will be given by photographer and Forest and Bird committee member, Philip Moll. For those interested in Lino Cutting, a demo workshop will be held on August 6 with printmaker Toni Hartill. Both events will be hosted at Depot Artspace.

The Flyway Print Exchange is an international environmental project consisting of 20 printmakers from the 9 countries along the East-Asian Australasian Flyway for migratory birds. Each artist has produced an edition of prints to raise funds for shorebird research in Australia (Please Note: These works will not be for sale). A print by each artist was posted unpackaged along the migration routes of the birds, from Australia and New Zealand to Alaska and back, and are exhibited showing all the stamps and marks of their journeys.

The artists involved in these two projects range from Aboriginal printmakers from remote communities to urban city dwellers of Melbourne and Auckland, local Devonport artists, and others from around New Zealand. It is a unique chance to display the different responses to the surrounding environment and reflect on why these birds make these places home.

Depot Artspace is proud to host these two travelling group exhibitions that actively draw attention to the importance of wildlife conservation in New Zealand and overseas.

From the Rivers to the Shore and The Flyway Print Exchange will be officially opened on Saturday 29th July from 2pm-3:30pm, in the Main Gallery, Depot Artspace, 28 Clarence Street, Devonport.
