Artistic Director Recognised as Leader in Her Field

Finalist for Westpac’s Women of Influence Award
Tempo Dance Festival

Westpac’s Women of Influence Award is an exceptional honour and something for which Carrie Rae Cunningham has deservedly been selected as a finalist. Since 2015, Carrie Rae has been Artistic Director of NZ Dance Festival Trust which presents Tempo Dance Festival and her dedication to New Zealand’s dance artists has long been acknowledged by her community and peers. Being selected in the Arts and Culture Category for this prestigious award is further evidence that those in the wider community are recognising her contribution.

Originally from the US, Carrie Rae came to New Zealand in 2003 to earn a Masters in Dance Studies from the University of Auckland. She has worked as producer for some of our major dance companies and last year produced an original dance performance event with choreographer Malia Johnston for the Auckland Tripartite Economic Summit, hosted by Auckland Council.

In 2007, Carrie Rae joined NZ Dance Festival Trust, which presents the annual Tempo Dance Festival, promoting outstanding emerging and mid-career dance artists to New Zealand audiences. Tempo Dance Festival is New Zealand’s premiere dance festival with this multi-talented woman at the helm.

The Women of Influence programme is in its fifth year and aims to

“recognise and celebrate those women from all walks of life who make a positive difference to the lives of their fellow New Zealanders; women whose achievements go beyond success in their personal and professional lives, and whose influence benefits their communities.” – Westpac

This award features such notable alumnae as film maker Gaylene Preston, internationally- renowned dancer and choreographer Parris Goebel and inaugural chair of New Zealand Global Women, lawyer Mai Chen
