Be creative and move your body in July at CoCA
As CoCA’s Winter exhibition MAKING SPACE reaches it’s final month, the gallery’s event calendar is packed with ways to experience the show.
Creative Māori and Pasifika youth are invited to develop their script writing and performance skills in a free weekend workshop and FAFSWAG Arts Collective will return to Christchurch to run a Vogue workshop and performance showcase.

Youth Script Writing and Performing Arts Workshop
Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 July / 10am-5pm both days / Free
Morning, afternoon tea and lunch provided
FIKA Writers are excited to bring to Ōtautahi, two of New Zealand's top theatre practitioners - Victor Rodger and Anapela Polataivao for a fantastic FREE Script Writing and Performing Arts Workshop for Māori and Pasifika aged 16-18 who are passionate about performing arts.

Venue: Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu Forecourt
Tu’u Mai Lou Lima means Give Me Your Hands. As part of Making Space at CoCA, Leafa Wilson will be performing outside the The Social residency caravan in the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu courtyard. Leafa says, “Everyone needs touch. This performance is an offering, a very small gesture of giving healing and receiving it through the sense of touch. I will hold and caress your hands and give you a particle of my life source.”

FAFSWAG Arts Collective presents STAY SUCKAH FREE, which is a performance showcase presenting new digital works from MAKESPACE: The Visibility Project 2017 and will feature performances from the FAFSWAG artist and special guests.
Movement Workshop with FAFSWAG’s Jermaine Dean
Saturday 29 July / 3-5pm / Free
Venue: YMCA Dance Studio
A beginner’s introduction to the five elements of Vogue with FAFSWAG Arts Collective’s Jermaine Dean. This workshop is about sharing space, getting your body moving and having heaps of fun. All bodies and experience levels welcome. Jermaine Dean is a skilled performer with years of experience on the floor. His style and approach is warm and inviting and simply makes you give it a try.
Whether you want to build your confidence as a performer, add some new moves to your repertoire or simply just learn how to slay the runway floor, join FAFSWAG as they give you the tea on how to Vogue like a butch queen.
Mind The Art: Meditation and Mindfulness Workshop
Saturday 29 July / 11.30-1.30pm / Free
As part of MAKING SPACE, The Department of Art Relations and Therapy (AKA Lucy Matthews), in collaboration with Adrienne Millwood, will be facilitating a meditation class and mindfulness exercise in the gallery.
At noon a teacher from Zen Tradition will lead a 25 minute meditation class, which will be followed by a mindfulness art intervention. Spaces are limited so please book your place at this free event to avoid disappointment. http://www.coca.org.nz/events/mindtheart
Workshop: Write Where You Are with Tusiata Avia
Sunday 6 August / 1pm / Free
Tusiata Avia of FIKA Writers will run a creative writing workshop at CoCA to help you explore your current writing practice. Wherever you are at: newbie, old pro, chugging-along-but-a-bit-bored, totally stuck – come as you are. We’ll try to cater for both poets and prose writers, do a few helpful exercises, stretch our creative muscles. There will be an opportunity at the end of the workshop for you to read and perform a short piece.
