2017 Wairarapa Art Review sponsors announced

Friday 17 July, 2017 - The Wairarapa Art Review has been a fixture of the region’s cultural calendar since 1999. It is a biennial event, organised by Friends of Aratoi in support of Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, Masterton.

The selector this year will be Mark Amery, Wellington art writer and critic.

The Friends of Aratoi are pleased to announce the sponsors for this year’s event:

Rosewood Premier Award: $2000

Lynette and David Dew of Rosewood Funeral Home have a philosophy of supporting the community and have been supporting local artists since 1997. They are pleased to be offering the Premier Award of the 2017 Wairarapa Art Review.

The Whole Nine Yards Highly Commended Award; $1000

NZ Pacific Studio Award for an Emerging Artist: 1 week residency

This year the NZPC Award is designed for a first time entrant in the Review. NZPC provides studio and residential facilities for selected national and international artists to work and experience different techniques, media, creative viewpoints and exchange stories of culture and history.

‘The week spent at NZ Pacific Studio was a wonderful chance for me to have continued uninterrupted time to paint. Also, it gave me the time to reflect on how my work could change in the future,’ said Andrée de Latour, 2013 NZPC award winner.

Jane Hyder Portrait Award: $500

2017 is the first time an award for portraits is offered. Artist Jan Hyder is pleased to present this award. Although Jane is a Wellington resident, she is a regular visitor to Wairarapa.

Frank Minehan People’s Choice Award: $500

This is the popular award, announced at the conclusion of the exhibition at Aratoi on 18 February 2018. This year it is offered by Frank Minehan, a constant supporter of Aratoi since its founding in 1969.

Frank is very happy to be able to offer this award and ‘looks forward to the opportunity to present it to the winner’.

The Wairarapa Art Review is held every two years since 1999 at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History. It is the Wairarapa’s premier art award and offers prize money for winning works selected by a judge. Approximately 100 entries are received from artists living in the region and around 40 are selected for exhibition. There is no entry fee. The Wairarapa Art Review is organised by the Friends of Aratoi which was formed in November 1997 to represent the Wairarapa arts community and promote awareness of Aratoi Museum of Wairarapa Art and History. The Friends act as advocates for Aratoi, supporting programmes and events. They also assist Aratoi with volunteers, operational funding and Collection purchases.

The Friends strongly believe the arts, culture and heritage are essential to the region’s economy, and investing in the arts is an investment in the region’s economy and wellbeing. ‘We are committed to continuing to build on the Wairarapa Art Review’s highly regarded profile’, said Sandra Debney The Friends Chair.

The Wairarapa Art Review will be held this year at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, Masterton in December 2017.

The 2017 Wairarapa Art Review will also be the first time the Award winning works are exhibited outside Masterton when they will be dispayed at Ventana Creative Collective, Martinborough following the closure at Aratoi on 18 February 2018. ‘This is to widen the community engagement across the region’, said Susanna Shadbolt, Director, Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History.
