NZWG Seed and Seed Advanced Grants
The New Zealand Writers Guild is pleased to congratulate the recipients of the First Round of Seed and Seed Advanced 2017
The application rate for this round was exceptional, with 76 Seed and 16 Seed Advancedapplications received. Encouragingly we saw an equal gender split across applications. Thanks to WIFT NZ for the support and encouragement in attracting female applicants. The judging process for this round involved impassioned, insightful and rigorous debate from our highly experienced assessors.
The assessors were impressed by the high standard of originality and voice among the top contenders in both the Seed, and the Seed Advanced pathways, which provided a real challenge when it came to selecting the final recipients.
The recipients for the first round of NZWG Seed Advanced Grants 2017 are:
• Dane Giraud – ‘Unnatural’
• Stuart Hoar – ‘Beatrice’
The recipients for the first round of NZWG Seed Grants 2017are:
• Rochelle Bright – ‘The Owl and the Bellbird’
• René Le Bas – ‘Kindred Spirit’
• Stephanie Matuku – ‘How Tui and Kae Found their Mother’
• Danny Mulheron & Nua Finau – ‘Dox’
The NZWG would like to thank assessors Pip Hall, Emily Anderton, Angus Finney and Claire Dobbin for their time, expertise and care in reading and assessing all the applications. Due to the high number of applications, each assessor identified where there was a potential conflict of interest and stood down from judging in that case.
NZWG would also like to thank the New Zealand Film Commission for supporting these initiatives — and especially for encouraging establishment of and supporting the new Seed Advanced grant.
Thanks to all who participated in this round. The NZWG is excited and heartened by the level of creativity and writing craft on offer in New Zealand.
Top applicants in this round demonstrated an ability to present applications of the highest standard. Many of the Top 20 in the Seed pathway had entered the same project previously, and showed growth, development and perseverance in their works.
The assessors remind applicants that proof reading, correct formatting of scripts and mastering application materials – logline, synopsis, treatment and sample scripts – does convey craft, professionalism and understanding of the application process.
