Someday Champions Make Winning Films
As young people around New Zealand start making films for this year’s Someday Challenge last year’s winners are scooping
up new awards.
For anyone aged up to 24 the annual challenge is to make a sustainability-related film of any genre, filmed with any
camera and any length up to 5 minutes.
The prize package for each of the 20 winning films includes a commitment that it will be entered into at least one
international film festival the following year.
So far in 2017 three of the winning films from 2016 have gone on to win further awards and another six have been
nominated at film festivals in New Zealand and overseas.
“We call our winning film-makers Someday Champions and it’s great to see them being recognised as champions elsewhere.
I’m really proud of what they’re achieving,” said David Jacobs, Director of The Outlook for Someday sustainability film
project for young people.
The Outlook for Someday has evolved from its origins in 2007 as a film challenge to a complete film-
making talent development pathway. It comprises film-making workshops for young people and the Someday Stories funded
films made by emerging young film-makers.
Someday Workshops are now taking place throughout New Zealand and the first series of Someday Stories will be online
from 24 August.
“After Someday Championshavetravelled the Someday pathway, they’re ready to take their next steps as professional
film-makers and sustainability storytellers,” said David Jacobs.
The entry deadline for the Someday Challenge in 2017 is 8 September.
The film-maker or team behind each of the 20 winning films will be honoured at The Someday Awards red-carpet ceremony at
Auckland’s Aotea Centre in December.
