Natraj School of Dance is proud to present “Tamil,” a thematic classical Indian dance production on the Saturday of 15
July 2017, at 6.30 pm at the Sacred Heart College, Laings Road, Lower Hutt, Wellington.
This year’s thematic Bharatanatyam classical dance production is in praise of the ancient language – Tamil. Tamil
language, originating from the Southern Indian Subcontinent is spoken by over seventy million people all over the world.
The scripted text in Tamil language dates back to over three thousand years.“Natya Sastra” – The Scripture of Dance,
which forms the basis of the classical Bharatanatyam dance was written in Tamil language, thousands of years ago.
Over 50 students will be performing in this year’s production. It will be about two hours of performance by children as
young as 5 years old to adults. Bharatanatyam is an art that transcends time and age.
Mrs. Prabha Ravi established Natraj School of Dance, an Indian classical Dance School based in Lower Hutt nineteen years
ago. Over these years, Prabha has trained over five hundred young students and encouraged them to participate in local
and national events. For her services to the fine arts, Prabha has been bestowed with Queen’s Services Medal in 2017 by
the New Zealand government.
This year’s production is proudly supported by Hutt City Council which promotes and celebrates the diversity of the
city. Prabha is a recipient of the Hutt City Mayoral Civic Award for her leadership in the field of fine arts.
Indian classical dance is not merely moving your body to a rhythm. It is a discovery of your roots, philosophy,
mythology, language, culture and many other facets of life. Every child develops one's personality and mind by learning
this dance. Many youth have benefited immensely through the dance school in learning this valuable art.
