Monday Live event bridges distance and celebrates talent
Students of Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) will be coming together in Auckland city on Monday for a music and arts event. As New Zealand’s state distance education provider with over 23,000 students, the school finds innovative ways to enable students to interact and collaborate both online and in person.
The ‘Monday Live’ event is the first by the school’s Auckland office, and will have musical performances from students and an exhibition of visual artwork.
Matthew Beardsworth will be giving a musical performance on viola. It’s been a remarkable year for the very talented Matthew. He composed for and played in ‘We Are One - A Concert for Autism’, alongside musicians including Jordan Luck and Mike Chunn. Matthew was also recently announced as the winner of the 2017 ‘Who Loves Who Competition’ by Play It Strange and Recorded Music NZ, for his interpretation of Goldenhorse’s ‘Maybe Tomorrow.’
The band Secondary Soundz from Pukekohe will also be performing. Their learning advisor Sue Ryan says she’s been impressed to see the group of teenagers practising from 8am for a few hours most mornings. Te Kura music teacher Hayley Yoon also supports the band, travelling regularly from Auckland for rehearsals.
Mike Hollings, Te Kura’s Chief Executive says, “Studying with Te Kura allows for flexible learning, when and where it suits the student and their whanau. It’s great to see some of our students working activities like band practice into their schedules, and this can also contribute to credits in NCEA; for example their performance in Monday’s event can go towards performance standards in NCEA music.”
There will also be performances from other music students, and visual art work on display from artists as far away as Whangarei.
A group of Te Kura Arts teachers came up with the idea for Monday Live during a discussion on ensuring that teaching and learning was authentic, and that students were supported to pursue their interests and passions.
Esquires Café is in the same building as the school’s Northern Regional office and has agreed to host the event.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Monday Live will be from 11am to 2pm, Monday 26 June, at Esquires Café, 124 Vincent Street, Auckland.
