Roxy5 Short Film Competition 2017 – Winners announced!

At a spectacular Red Carpet event on Wednesday night, 12 finalists, selected from the original 26 entries, were screened at Roxy Cinema, Miramar, where the award winners of the Roxy5 Short Film Competition 2017 were announced by Oscar winner, Jamie Selkirk.

Those winners are; Shelter from Wellington High School, Supreme Winner for 2017, and Ranginui and Papatūānuku from Otaki College, who’ve been awarded Runner Up.

Mentoring prizes were given to Kāpiti College’s Sock Mess Monster for Best Original Musical Score, and Tawa College for their film Whai Whai picking up Best VFX, while the People’s Choice Award went to Raroa Intermediate’s Home Sweet Home.

The judging panel were impressed by Shelter’s themes and creative storytelling, delivering complex drama as it details a group of friends connected by their own issues at home.

“Shelter featured great performances, clever use of motion graphics and a strong score, it was a truly unique and emotional journey”, says Peter Graham, Digital Producer, Capital E.

While Ranginui and Papatūānuku, with its clever incorporation of Māori mythology came a close second, in an outstandingly broad and compelling set of films. These two schools will go on to remake their films under the guidance of professional industry mentors and Capital E Digital tutors, providing an authentic opportunity to help start them on the path to successful careers in creative digital industries.

The judges noted the remarkable quality and sophistication of all 26 entries, which ranged from slapstick comedy through to stop-motion animation and suspense, and displayed how much the filmmaking skills of students are improving every year of the competition.

Roxy5 Co-Producers Melissa Conway & Kristy Grant say “For some schools this is their third year of entering the competition, for others this is the first time around, but what is outstanding this year is how the much quality of the films and range of ideas has been lifted across the board”, says Roxy5 Co-Producers Melissa Conway & Kristy Grant.

Every student that entered received a certificate of participation, and with many returning from last year’s event, it’s clear that Roxy5 Short Film Competition has captured children and young people’s imaginations, inspiring them to go on to be our filmmakers of the future.
