Unitec and Auckland Basketball Bringing Plays of the Week to College Teams

Auckland, May 24, 2017 - Basketball players in the Auckland secondary schools competition can now watch their own personalised highlights reels, full game footage, and review their stats, just like an NBA Player tuning in to SportsCenter.

Unitec Institute of Technology partners with Basketball Auckland, Waitakere and Counties-Manukau secondary school competitions and for 2017 has installed the Glory League interactive basketball platform at 19 courts in the Auckland region.

The Glory League platform places a camera above the court which uses software to automatically track the on-court action. It then processes the footage in combination with data entered by courtside staff to create personalised highlights and stats which can be viewed and shared online.

The systems were switched on yesterday and taken for a test run at the Unitec Sports Centre as the Crowd Goes Wild All-Stars took on Massey High School in an exhibition match. Footage of this epic clash can be found here.

A ‘Plays of the Week’ video featuring the best highlights from around the leagues will be posted on the Auckland Basketball Facebook page. Viewers can vote for their favourite and weekly prizes will be awarded to the winners.

While the Glory League platform is a fun addition for secondary school players, Nick Sheppard, Unitec’s Dean of Innovation and Development, hopes it will help to develop the next generation of players and coaches.

“Unitec staff have been active in the development and delivery of Sport New Zealand’s Growing Coaches leadership programme. We’ve had a focus on basketball recently, hosting workshops at our Mt Albert campus. Basketball is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing sports and it can be a challenge to keep up with the demand, particularly in supporting our skilled and experienced coaches.

“The Glory League platform is brilliant; it makes you feel like pro player. But it’s also a great teaching tool, allowing teams to review games, work on their tactics and individual skills.”

As the season wraps up the ‘Plays of the Week’ winners will be rounded up into a “Plays of the Season” montage and voting will take place for the main prize – the full Glory League platform installed at a venue of the winner’s choosing.
