Barbara Brookes’ History of New Zealand Women Winner!
Ockham NZ Book Award, Illustrated Non-Fiction Section
Congratulations to Barbara Brookes, Winner of the Ockham Award, Illustrated Non-Fiction section!
We are thrilled that Professor Brookes has won this award! A History of New Zealand Womenrepresents a lifetime’s research and writing by the author, and decades of strong publishing on women’s issues by BWB.
A History of New Zealand Women offers the first narrative account of this country’s past from the perspective of the women who have lived here. It is a timely publication, as young women ask their own questions about ‘where we are now’, and as women in leadership take the story forward.
As Māori historian Melissa Matutina Williams has written: ‘This is a big history, but it is also an intimate history.’ It is the story of women’s lives from many different times; it is a narrative that grounds us in the present and takes us into the future.
Tonight, we celebrate this author, this book, and this award!
