While the cooler months are steadily approaching, Bach Musica NZ presents a heart-warming programme as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations. The ensemble is delighted to welcome
back Rita Paczian, their Music Director and international conductor in residence, who is guaranteed to ignite the Town Hall with her
distinct and compelling musical gusto.
The evening will open with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor. The composition undertook quite a journey before becoming the work we know today. Its debut during one of Beethoven’s
own benefit concerts saw the composer performing it with barely anything more but “what looked like Egyptian
hieroglyphs” according to his student and page turner on the night.
In the second half, we will hear Bach’s Cantata 21 Ich hatte viel Bekummernis, which is arguably his most outstanding Cantata. The deeply moving work is revealing the greatness and dazzling technical
virtuosity of this great composer whom Bach Musica NZ was named after four decades ago, a perfect choice for the ensemble’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
Pianist Bradley Wood is one of New Zealand’s finest young emerging artists. He has been the Auckland Philharmonia's Piano Scholar and won
first prizes at both the Christchurch National Concerto Competition and the University of Auckland Graduation Gala Concerto Competition. He toured the UK with the Tasman Duo after winning the Pettman ROSL Chamber Music Scholarship and he is now preparing to continue his studies overseas starting in September at the Royal College of Music in London.
Bach Musica NZ is also delighted to welcome international tenor Lachlan Craig for his first appearance with the ensemble. He will be joined by returning NZ Opera Resident Artist soprano Emma Roxburgh, mezzo soprano Dilys Fong and Dame Malvina Foundation protege baritone Jonathan Eyers.
