When US singer songwriter and 'King of Margaritaville' Jimmy Buffett, was invited to play Australia at the 2017 Byron Bay Bluesfest, he decided to also make good on his cancelled 2011 New Zealand shows, following an accident while performing at his Sydney show the very night before he was due to land on our shores. On the opening of the touring window, Jimmy decided to do some research on where to play in New Zealand.
Jimmy's fans will be aware that he is a huge admirer and self-proclaimed student of American writer, humourist, entrepreneur and lecturer Mark Twain, having paid homage in several books and songs, even being the voice of Huckleberry Finn to Clint Eastwood's Twain on the CD "Mark Twain: Words & Music". On reading that Mark Twain had toured New Zealand on a speaking tour in 1895, Jimmy wanted to see if any of the venues visited by the author of literary classic 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' were still standing and if he could perform at any of them, given the limited time available to him.
At very short notice and with only two New Zealand dates open to him, the closest he could get to somewhat follow in the renowned satirical storyteller's New Zealand touring footsteps, was to book shows at Wellington's beautiful Opera House and Christchurch's stunning Isaac Theatre Royal. It is in this spirit, and that of a travelling musician, adventurer and fellow raconteur, that Jimmy will draw on his love and 'spiritual' connection at these two unique New Zealand concerts next week. "I might even go into one of the stories I've always loved, first of all, see if anyone actually remembers Mark Twain and if they do that's a good thing and we'll go from there. I have enough references and songs of my own that I can explain to people my admiration…we all have our own inspirations and he certainly is one of mine."
Fans can expect Jimmy to weave some Twain magic into the fabric of his songs and banter, while at the same time receiving a memorable connection to a remarkable period in New Zealand history that really resonates with Mr Jimmy Buffett. "We always study people that we admire in order to try and create something of our own, and I think there's a lot of Mark Twain in what I do and one of his great quotes is 'Creativity is only undetected plagiarism', so there you go!"
Of course, it goes without saying that Jimmy will perform all his classic hits 'Cheeseburger in Paradise', 'Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes' and the favourite all-time classic 'Margaritaville'. This change in latitude means that this is your chance to see this legendary artist performing all his hits right here, these are shows that are not to be missed.
Joining Jimmy for these two very special evenings is Li'l Chuck, The One Man Skiffle Machine – an authentic one man band performing 'good time music with old time style'. Blessed with the ability to handle multiple instruments at a time, he is the master of coordination, cranking out the harmonica, resonator guitar, kick drum, hi hat, kazoo and vocals to give the audience a rollicking good time. A perfect fit for these shows, Li'l Chuck has spent a lifetime rummaging through the drawers of 1930's-50's music, presenting it in the unique style of the street performers from those glory days. Li'l Chuck is also living proof that men can indeed multitask.
Finally, just like Mark Twain, Jimmy Buffett is also famous for quotes of his own and here's one that should be adhered to at all times: "If life gives you limes, make margarita's!"
